The Red Sox lost three out of four to the Rays, but those defeats will mean nothing when they begin a two-game set in the Bronx on Monday.

Red Sox probable pitcher

Jon Lester

  • #31 LHP
  • (1-2) 5.40 ERA 33 SO
It wasn't Lester's finest moment. He got hit hard early in his last outing in Cleveland, but showing fortitude if not his best stuff, Lester ate up innings for the Red Sox. He didn't let the game get totally out of control, though it might have if he hadn't picked off a couple of baserunners. But so far this season, Lester continues to look for the consistency that has marked his past. And he needs to be consistent if the Red Sox are to hold keep their rotation strong with two starters on the disabled list.

The Yankees will host the Red Sox for the first time at the new Yankee Stadium in the opener of a two-game series Monday with Phil Hughes on the mound.

Yankees probable pitcher

Phil Hughes

  • #65 RHP
  • (1-0) 0.00 ERA 6 SO
Winless in the big leagues since Sept. 27, 2007, Hughes showcased sharp stuff in handcuffing the Tigers' lineup to just two hits over six scoreless innings on Tuesday. Firing his fastball as high as 96 mph, Hughes spotted his curveball and used his cutter to strike out six, walking two. His biggest moment came in the fourth inning, inducing Josh Anderson to ground out with the bases loaded. Hughes was activated from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre earlier that afternoon, summoned to jump into the rotation as right-hander Chien-Ming Wang works on mechanical and physical issues at the club's complex in Tampa, Fla.

Sox at home in Bronx

Playing their first game at the new Yankee Stadium, the Red Sox looked right at home, improving to 4-0 against New York this year thanks to 10 strikeouts from Jon Lester and a five-out save from Jonathan Papelbon. Jason Bay added much-needed insurance with a late homer.

Hughes can't help

Phil Hughes couldn't carry the success of his season debut to a meeting with the Red Sox, who chased the righty after four innings and shook off back-to-back homers by Johnny Damon and Mark Teixeira in the fifth inning. Teixeira added a second homer in the bottom of the eighth.
