CLE@NYY: Kuroda stellar over seven frames vs. Tribe

With CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte on the disabled list, Yankees manager Joe Girardi has advised the rest of his starting staff against trying to do too much in an attempt to replace their injured teammates.

"The big thing for our guys to understand is that [Ivan] Nova and [Phil] Hughes and [Hiroki] Kuroda can't make the starts for CC and Andy," Girardi said. "So just be yourself. Don't try to do too much, because when you do that, usually things go awry. So to me, the big thing is just reminding them, 'Just go out and do what you do, and we'll take care of the other two days. It's not your responsibility.'"

Nova heeded those words with a great outing on Thursday night, when he lasted 7 1/3 innings, allowing just one run. Next up is Kuroda, who will take the ball for the Yankees on Saturday against the White Sox, who enter having won four straight games.

Kuroda is 7-7 in 15 starts this season, his first with the Yankees, but despite the up-and-down nature of his season, he was terrific his last time out. The right-hander picked up the win, going seven innings and allowing just one run. He struck out seven Indians batters.

June has been kind to Kuroda, who has gone 3-1 with a 2.38 ERA in the month. He's allowed just two home runs in five June starts and has lasted seven innings in all but one of them. He'll try to provide length once again for the Yankees, who needed 6 2/3 innings from their bullpen in Friday's 14-7 loss to the White Sox.

Sabathia and Pettitte both went on the disabled list on Wednesday. Sabathia's injury is a strained left groin, while Pettitte fractured his left ankle and will be out at least eight weeks.

Jake Peavy will oppose Kuroda for the White Sox. Peavy has lost three straight starts and hasn't won this month, despite posting an ERA of 2.36 in June. The right-hander allowed a season-high 10 hits in his last start, against the Twins.

White Sox: Another rookie added
• Chicago placed right-handed pitcher Brian Bruney on the disabled list before Friday's win. In a corresponding move, the club purchased the contract of right-hander Brian Omogrosso from Triple-A Charlotte. Omogrosso's first appearance will be his Major League debut, and he is now the ninth rookie on the Sox active roster and seventh rookie pitcher.

• First baseman Paul Konerko has a .321 lifetime average against the Yankees. He's hit 21 home runs and collected 61 RBIs against New York over the course of his career.

Yankees: Jeter passes Ripken
• Shortstop Derek Jeter's double in the first inning on Friday moved him ahead of Cal Ripken Jr. on Major League Baseball's all-time hits list. The double was the 3,185th hit of Jeter's career, and he is now in sole possession of 13th place on the list. Next up is Nap Lajoie, who amassed 3,252 hits over his career.

• Catcher Russell Martin did not start Friday's game due to back stiffness but he expects to be "back to stay" on Saturday. Martin entered Friday's game as a defensive replacement.

• The Yankees recalled right-handed pitcher David Phelps from Class A Advanced Tampa and optioned right-handed pitcher Ryota Igarashi to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.

Worth noting
• Peavy has dominated Martin over the course of their careers. The two faced off frequently when they played in the National League West. Martin is just 4-for-32 lifetime against Peavy and has struck out nine times.

• Kuroda has made two starts against the White Sox in his career, going 1-1 with a 3.77 ERA.
