Rocket pleased with draft
By Mark Feinsand / MLB.com
NEW YORK -- The Yankees made Roger Clemens happy with their 2002 amateur draft,
selecting four pitchers from his alma mater, the University of Texas.
"It's about time they wised up," Clemens said. "It's good to bring some orange
blood in here."
The four Texas pitchers were part of a draft class of
28 players, including 16 pitchers. Every pick from round Nos. 23-30 was a pitcher.
New York had no first-round pick, having given it up to the Oakland A's when the
Yankees signed free-agent Jason Giambi in September. The Yanks also sacrificed
their second- and third-round picks after signing Steve Karsay and Rondell White
but received a second-round pick when St. Louis signed Tino Martinez.
New York's first pick was 18-year-old Brandon Weeden, a right-handed reliever
from Edmond Santa Fe High School in Edmond, Okla. Weeden, who was a
three-sport athlete, is very excited to join the Yankees
family and will not attend Oklahoma State University, where he had committed to
play next season.
"I'm signing, there's no doubt. It's too good of an opportunity to turn down,"
Weeden said. "When you're picked by one of the best teams in baseball, it's
pretty hard to turn that down."
Yankees Vice President of Scouting Lin Garrett said the team's approach to
the 2002 draft was much different than last year, when the Yankees had five
selections in the first two rounds.
"We weren't doing handsprings about the depth of the draft, but after the first
day, we were more than pleased," Garrett said. "We're happy with the draft. We
got some good athletes."
New York drafted 16 pitchers; six outfielders; two first basemen; and one second
baseman, third baseman, shortstop and catcher.
When general manager Brian Cashman was asked if he was hoping one of the four Texas
pitchers would turn out to be the next Clemens, he smiled.
"I don't care if it comes out of the University of Texas group or not. If we get
a little Roger with any of these guys, I'll be happy," Cashman said.
So will the Yankees.
