Pitchers go from fastballs, changeups to sliders, curves

They will need all of their pitches on Wednesday, as they throw batting practice to the team's hitters during the second full-squad workout.
"For the first time out, everything went pretty well," said Randy Johnson, who tossed some sliders and two-seamers during his session. "We'll have a couple of times at batting practice, then go get 'em. I feel like I'm right where I need to be."
Johnson, who threw seven mound sessions before arriving at camp, should get a better feel for his progress when he gets to face live hitters.

"I'll be able to get a better idea of my stuff in relation to having a hitter up there," Johnson said. "It's as much for me as it is for them."
John Flaherty worked with Johnson on Saturday, and he was very impressed with the left-hander's sharpness.
"His ball moved a lot more than I remembered," Flaherty said. "His two-seamer is really good, which I didn't remember from facing him."
Which hitters will have the luxury of facing the five-time Cy Young winner is unknown, but Flaherty wouldn't mind being in one of the other groups.
"It's usually not your choice, it's chosen for you," Flaherty said. "What can you do? You struck out against Randy all those years, so if you strike out in BP, what's the big deal?"
Said manager Joe Torre: "They know it's not going to be a lot of fun."

Bernie bummer: Bernie Williams was not in camp on Monday for his physical. The veteran center fielder was dealing with a stomach virus.
Williams visited a doctor in Tampa, taking his physical at the doctor's office instead. Torre said that Williams could be in camp as early as Tuesday, though he may not take the field until Wednesday unless a doctor clears him to take part in Tuesday's full-squad workout.
"We don't want anybody catching this thing," said Torre of Williams' absence on Monday. "With as many people as we have here, we didn't want to take a chance."
Shouldering the load: Gary Sheffield's surgically repaired left shoulder "got a little cranky" this week, according to Torre, when he tried to take as many swings in batting practice as Derek Jeter during a workout at the team's minor-league complex.

Torre, who saw Sheffield the other day while the outfielder received treatment at Legends Field, didn't think that the shoulder would be an issue.
"He's better, he's fine now," Torre said. "The other day, I think he tried to do too much. That's all it was. There's no damage."
Sheffield underwent surgery to repair a tear in his labrum in November. He did not work out over the weekend, but is expected to be ready for Opening Day.
"He's going to have to not take as many swings as someone who hasn't had surgery," Torre said.
Ready to arrive: Felix Escalona, the only player not to report to Tampa for the Yankees as of Monday, has resolved his visa issues in Venezuela and could be in camp as early as Tuesday.
Escalona, 25, has played 74 career games with Tampa Bay and New York, batting .203 with no home runs and 11 RBIs. He hit .308 with seven homers and 59 RBIs in 130 games for Triple-A Columbus last season.
