TAMPA -- The Rocket has landed.

Just before high noon on Monday, Roger Clemens began workouts under 91-degree heat at the Yankees' player development center in Tampa, Fla., in preparation for his return to the Major League squad.

The seven-time Cy Young Award winner warmed up with some light jogging and stretches before doing the abdominal exercises he has made famous over the years.

Clemens then soft tossed with Phil Hughes, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a hamstring injury, for about 10 minutes. Clemens signed a $28 million, one-year contract on May 6. With similar conditions to his agreement with the Astros, his contract includes the personal service deal in which he serves as both a mentor and coach.

The tall righty showcased his coaching ability by spending just under 30 minutes instructing Hughes on the proper leg lift and kick from the stretch and the correct follow-through and arm slot.

Following the coaching lesson, Clemens took ground balls on the mound and practiced throwing to first base and second base with Hughes covering each base. The 6-foot-4 right-hander attempted five grounders, which he threw to first base and 12 more, tossing to second. Although he misplayed a couple of short hops, Clemens looked sharp fielding and making the turn.

Following the on-field workout, Clemens spent over an hour in the complex before departing. Although he did not speak at length with reporters, he did stop and exit his Hummer to sign autographs for several fans waiting at the complex gate. Before re-entering his vehicle, Clemens offered that his workout went "good."

Clemens is scheduled to toss a bullpen session on Tuesday and, barring any issues, will start on Friday for Class A Tampa at Legends Field. Following that start, Clemens is expected to pitch once or, possibly twice, for Double-A Trenton before making his first appearance for the Yankees.
