NEW YORK -- Yankees manager Joe Girardi, like just about any other person who has watched Mariners star outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, has a great, if not fond, appreciation for the Japanese veteran.

"His hand-eye coordination is unbelievable," Girardi marveled before the Yankees hosted the Mariners on Saturday afternoon in the second contest of a three-game series.

"You look at his last at-bat last night," Girardi said, recalling a single by Ichiro. "I think he's beyond being on his front foot, and he's able to keep his hands back and hit a line drive up the middle.

"He's just an incredible hitter," Girardi continued. "He changes the way you play defense. He creates havoc on the bases. You take all of that, and then he's a great defender. He's a complete player. As a leadoff hitter, he's a force."
