The Yankees departed for Florida shortly after the postponement of Sunday's game, with an announcement made at the scheduled 1:05 p.m. ET start time. No makeup date has been determined, though the Yankees have internally been discussing two later common off-days as possibilities.
Because of the rainout, Andy Pettitte will start the first game of a four-game series in St. Petersburg on Monday, followed by Chien-Ming Wang and Mike Mussina.
The Yankees are considering if left-hander Kei Igawa -- who allowed six earned runs in three-plus innings to the Tigers on Friday -- will make the start on Thursday, pushing right-hander Darrell Rasner to Friday against the Mets. Their other option is to skip Igawa and continue with Rasner against the Rays as originally planned.
"It's something we have to talk about," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.
Rasner, who threw six-plus innings of two-run ball in a victory on Saturday, said that he would throw his normal bullpen session on Tuesday. If he doesn't start on Thursday, he would throw another bullpen session that day to prepare for Friday's start.
The Yankees may also mull bringing right-hander Ian Kennedy back up to the big leagues or consider another Minor League hurler. Kennedy's Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees were rained out on Sunday in Indianapolis, and the rookie is to start in the first game of a doubleheader on Monday.
"You'd feel pretty good about it, obviously," Girardi said. "You still have to make that next step and do it here on a consistent basis. But you'd feel good about two starts in a row."
Mussina said that the team has two options to make up the game in Detroit -- July 24 or Sept. 1. If the Yankees were to play on July 24, that would create a stretch in which New York would play 27 straight games coming out of the All-Star break, traveling to Detroit off a homestand before opening a three-game series in Boston the next day.
Mussina said the Yankees would prefer to play a day game in Detroit on Sept. 1, coming in after a homestand on their way to start a nine-game road trip against the Rays in St. Petersburg.
But if the Tigers would rather play a night game to capitalize on what figures to be a full house, Mussina said, "We'd rather have a night game in July than a night game in September."
Girardi said no final decisions were readily apparent.
"We'll discuss all the dates," Girardi said. "I don't know how much of a choice we have. Obviously, if it's up to us, we'll do what's favorable for our schedule. You've got to play the game sometime."
