Yanks hosting two public events

NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees are kicking off the beginning of their series with the Tampa Bay Rays with two community events on Saturday, one at the New York Public Library and another at Franz Siegel Park in the Bronx.General manager Brian Cashman and injured relief pitcher Brian Bruney will be on the ground floor of the New York Public Library's Stephen A. Schwarzman Building (5th Avenue and 42nd Street) at 2 p.m. to kick off Summer Reading 2009. Kids in attendance will have the opportunity to sign up for summer reading lists, and the first 150 children will receive a pair of tickets to an upcoming game at Yankee Stadium. Face painting, games and dance competition will also be offered.
The Yankees have donated $50,000 for the purchase of 2,500 books, and they donated $75,000 to help renovate the Grand Concourse branch of the NYPL to better serve Bronx residents.
One hour after the Yankees' game ends on Saturday, third baseman Alex Rodriguez will be at Franz Siegel Park (153rd Street and Grand Concourse) along with actor Richard Gere for an All-Star Little League game. Rodriguez will coach the United Youth Baseball League team from the Bronx and Gere will handle the Dominican Federation team from Manhattan.
After the three-inning game, scouts and personnel from the Yankees will deliver a special-skills clinic.
