Nationals infielder Brett Carroll and catcher Carlos Maldonado have declared themselves Minor League free agents, according to Baseball America.
Both Carroll and Maldonado had brief stints in the Major Leagues this season. Carroll played five games and was hitless in two at-bats. Maldonado appeared in four games and was hitless in nine at-bats.
Other Minor Leaguers -- Atahualpa Severino, Mark Teahen, Zech Zinicola, Mike MacDougal and Seth Bynum -- are expected to be Minor League free agents soon.
Desmond, Nats may talk contract in offseason
WASHINGTON -- It would not come as a surprise if shortstop Ian Desmond and the Nationals' front office talked about a contract extension sometime this offseason.
Desmond will be arbitration eligible and it was learned through a baseball source that the Desmond camp and the Nationals' front office had preliminary talks about a contract extension earlier this season.
However, Desmond put a stop to the talks because he did not want negotiations to be a distraction. According to the source, Desmond cared more about winning. Desmond and general manager Mike Rizzo were not available for comment.
As of Wednesday, both sides have yet to talk again about a contract extension.
Manager Davey Johnson has often compared Desmond to Hall of Famer Barry Larkin, the best player Johnson ever managed. Desmond lived up to those expectations in 2012, hitting .292 with 23 home runs and 73 RBIs -- all career highs.
Top prospect Goodwin could join Nats in 2013
WASHINGTON -- One National League scout is so high on outfielder Brian Goodwin that he predicts that Goodwin will be in the Major Leagues by the middle of next year. The scout didn't rule out Goodwin playing left or center field for the Nationals.
Goodwin played in his first full season in professional baseball, hitting a combined .280 with 14 home runs, 52 RBIs and 64 runs scored for Class A Hagerstown and Double-A Harrisburg. Goodwin is currently playing in the Arizona Fall League.
Goodwin is projected to be a leadoff hitter in the future.
