Padres select RHP Thad Weber from Triple-A Tucson and designate INF Cody Ransom for assignment
INF Chase Headley to begin rehab assignment with Class A Lake Elsinore
SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres today announced that they have selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Thad Weber from Triple-A Tucson and have designated infielder Cody Ransom for assignment. In addition, the club announced infielder Chase Headley will begin a rehabilitation assignment with Class A Lake Elsinore on Friday, April 12. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.
Weber, 28, has made one start for Triple-A Tucson. The right-hander earned the win on April 7 at Salt Lake City after working 5.0 innings of one-run ball, allowing five hits and no walks while striking out five. He was claimed off waivers by the Padres from the Detroit Tigers last season on August 23, 2012. Weber made his Major League debut for the Tigers last year, appearing in two games for Detroit. Over parts of six minor league seasons in the Tigers (2008-12) and Padres (2012-13) organizations, he has gone 37-46 with a 4.02 ERA (311 ER/696.1 IP) in 119 games, 117 starts.
Ransom, 37, has appeared in five games for the Padres thus far. The infielder was the Padres Opening Day third baseman on April 1 against the New York Mets at Citi Field. Over parts of 11 Major League seasons with the San Francisco Giants (2001-04), Houston Astros (2007), New York Yankees (2008-09), Philadelphia Phillies (2010), Arizona Diamondbacks (2011-12), Milwaukee Brewers (2012) and Padres (2013), he has hit .215 (128-for-594) with 37 doubles, one triple, 21 home runs, 85 RBI and 90 runs scored in 326 games played.
Headley, 28, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on March 31, retroactive to March 22, with a fractured left thumb suffered on March 17. The switch-hitter set career-highs in nearly every offensive category in 2012, hitting .286 (173-for-604) with 31 doubles, two triples, 31 home runs, a National-League leading 115 RBI and 95 runs scored in 161 games played for the Padres. He is expected to begin a rehabilitation assignment with Single-A Lake Elsinore on Friday, April 12, and to be present at Petco Park for pre-game ceremonies to receive his 2012 Louisville Silver Slugger, Rawlings Gold Glove and MLB.com GIBBY awards prior to the start of the Padres' 5:40 p.m. game against the Colorado Rockies.
