Astros Press Release
Astros sign 11th-round pick German
Houston signs 32 of 40 selections in 2013 Draft, including top 14 picks
ST. PETERSBURG, FL - The Houston Astros announced today the signing of right-handed pitcher Devonte German, who was selected in the 11th round of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft. German is the final draft pick to sign with Houston prior to today's signing deadline of 5 p.m. ET. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The official announcement was made by Astros Director of Amateur Scouting Mike Elias.
German, 18, went 12-4 with a 1.64 ERA, while collecting 157 strikeouts in his 115.0 innings pitched this season at Bishop Manogue High School in Reno, NV. German was a 2013 Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American and earned Nevada All-State honors in both 2011 and 2012. A star on the football field as well, the 6'5" German played tight end for his high school team and caught six touchdowns during his senior season.
"Devonte is 6'5" and an accomplished 3-sport athlete, so the word with him is projection," said Elias. "In addition to that, he's already a very good pitcher. He has feel for the strike zone, a solid breaking ball and good mound presence. He is a great upside arm for our pitching coaches to work with, so we're very happy to have him signed and out pitching for us this year."
The Astros signed 32 of their 40 draft picks this season, including all of their top 10 selections.
