Twins sign right-handed pitcher MIke Pelfrey and catcher Kurt Suzuki
Darin Mastroianni outrighted to Triple-A Rochester
The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have signed free agent right-handed pitcher Mike Pelfrey to a two-year, $11 million contract and catcher Kurt Suzuki to a one-year, $2.75 million contract.
Pelfrey originally signed with the Twins on December 20, 2012 and made 29 starts, going 5-13 with a 5.19 ERA (152.2 IP, 88 ER), 53 walks and 101 strikeouts in 2013. He was tied for first on the staff in strikeouts and second in innings pitched and starts. The 29-year-old has a career record of 55-67 with a 4.48 ERA (1049.0 IP, 522 ER), 371 walks, 607 strikeouts and four complete games in parts of eight major league seasons with the New York Mets and Twins.
Suzuki played 94 combined games for Oakland Athletics and Washington Nationals last season, hitting .232 (66-for-285) with 13 doubles, five home runs and 32 RBI. He is a career .253 hitter (748-for-2961) with 152 doubles, 67 home runs and 359 RBI in 840 games between Oakland and Washington. The 30-year-old has caught 738 games since 2008, the fourth most in baseball. He was originally drafted by the A's in the second round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft out of Cal State Fullerton.
Additionally, the Twins have outrighted outfielder Darin Mastroianni to Triple-A Rochester. The Twins roster is now at 40.
