Lester, Colon to make debut as others like Weaver aim to keep rolling
Monday marks the start of another exciting week of Spring Training games in the Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues, with tons of star power, intriguing matchups and pitching debuts.
Plenty of eyes will be on Red Sox ace Jon Lester, who makes his Grapefruit League debut when he faces the Rays on MLB.TV at 1:05 p.m. ET. He will oppose Tampa Bay's Jake Odorizzi.
Boston manager John Farrell has taken it slow with the veteran after he threw deep into October. Lester is expected to attempt three to four innings and 55 to 60 pitches.
"I think you need to get into a game and get adrenaline and go through your whole routine and not throw at 9:30 in the morning, stuff like that," Lester said last week. "I think that's the next step, get on the five-day progression."
Tigers right-hander Max Scherzer, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, takes the hill against the Cardinals for his third start of the spring. The game can be seen on MLB.TV at 1:05 p.m. ET. Scherzer will face talented right-hander Shelby Miller, who is set to make his second start of the spring. Miller allowed one run on one hit in 2 2/3 innings against the Red Sox in his Grapefruit League debut.
"I know competing here is what it's all about," Miller said after the start. "If I feel good, physically feel good and feel the ball coming out of my hand good, everything is going to be there eventually."
Another talented duo will be on the hill when the White Sox take on the Brewers in Phoenix. Chicago ace Chris Sale faces Milwaukee right-hander Yovani Gallardo on MLB.TV at 4:05 p.m. ET.
A's right-hander Jarrod Parker will make his third Cactus League start when he faces the Dodgers on MLB.TV at 4:05 p.m. ET. After struggling in his first outing, Parker turned things around in his second, allowing one run on two hits in 3 1/3 innings against the Brewers. Hyun-Jin Ryu will also make his third start of the spring and could be stretched out to five innings.
The Braves will visit the Phillies in a clash of National League East rivals at 1:05 p.m. ET on MLB.TV. Cliff Lee is expected to make his third Grapefruit League start. In two outings, he has gone a combined five innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Atlanta sends Brandon Beachy to the hill.
Bartolo Colon, who signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the Mets in the offseason, will make his debut in a 1:10 p.m. ET contest against the Marlins on MLB.TV. The 40-year-old has been slowed early in Spring Training because of a calf issue. He will face left-hander Brad Hand, who is competing for a spot in the bullpen or back end of the Marlins' rotation.
Angels right-hander Jered Weaver gets the ball as the team travels to Goodyear to face the Indians at 4:05 p.m. ET on MLB.TV. Dominant in his first two starts of the spring, the Halos' ace has a 1.29 ERA in seven innings. Cleveland counters will UCLA star and Southern California native Trevor Bauer.
