A's victory ends with successful challenge
Replay overturns safe call for final out of game; Giants win earlier review
SAN FRANCISCO -- The A's 6-1 win over the Giants on Thursday was cemented by a replay review.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Gregor Blanco tapped a grounder a few feet down the third-base line and was initially called safe at first on a wide throw by catcher Derek Norris. Oakland manager Bob Melvin challenged the ruling that first baseman Stephen Vogt had taken his foot off the bag, and after a review, the call was overturned to end the game.
In the sixth inning, Giants manager Bruce Bochy executed his own successful challenge of a call at first on Hunter Pence's grounder to shortstop. Pence was awarded the base after a review, but the Giants didn't score in the frame.
