The New York Yankees announced today that Stump Merrill, who enters his 29th season with the organization in 2005, has been named Special Assistant to the General Manager.

Merrill, 61, has served the Yankees as a Manager at both the Major- and Minor-League levels and has also been a special assignment scout and roving minor-league instructor. In 21 seasons as a minor-league manager in the Yankee organization, Merrill compiled 1,460 victories. The winningest manager in (Triple-A) Columbus Clippers' history with 573 victories, he also holds the Clippers' record for most games managed (1,046).

On June 6, 1990, he became the 29th Manager in Yankee history and compiled a 120-155 record during the 1990 and 1991 seasons.
