Wright solid, but Yankees fall to Tigers

Minor League prospect allows three runs in first spring start

at Lakeland, Fla.

Yankees at the plate: Jason Giambi put the Yankees on the board with an RBI single in the sixth inning. He had two hits on the afternoon.

Tigers at the plate: Gary Sheffield doubled and scored on a Magglio Ordonez single to open the scoring in the first inning. Former Yankees farmhand Jackson Melian added a two-run double in the seventh. Carlos Guillen went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Yankees on the mound: Minor Leaguer Chase Wright allowed three runs over six innings in his first Spring Training start for New York. Brian Bruney allowed three runs in the seventh.

Tigers on the mound: Justin Verlander looked solid in his final spring tuneup with five scoreless innings of two-hit ball and six strikeouts. Jason Grilli and Bobby Seay pitched an inning apiece, giving up a run each, before Joel Zumaya worked two-thirds of an inning.

Grapefruit League records: Yankees 14-13; Tigers 21-10-2.

Up next: The Tigers and Yankees close out their respective Spring Training schedules with a 1:05 p.m. ET game Saturday afternoon at Legends Field in Tampa, Fla. Mike Maroth is scheduled to oppose Kei Igawa.
