The 34-year-old outfielder was walking gingerly after fouling a ball off his foot during an at-bat on Monday evening, which came during New York's 4-0 victory over the Reds at Legends Field.
"Johnny just has a bruised toe," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It doesn't feel good and it'll probably be sore. We'll evaluate it every day and determine if he's going to play. It was black and blue today on top of his knuckle on his toe."
Damon had the X-rays and MRI taken at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said that Damon will be listed as day-to-day. He was not listed on the club's travel roster for Wednesday's game against the Rays in St. Petersburg.
Damon batted .270 with 12 home runs, 62 RBIs and 27 stolen bases in 141 games for the Yankees last season. In seven Grapefruit League games, he is hitting .316 (6-for-19) with four doubles, two runs scored and one RBI.
