Yankees partner with Keep America Beautiful
By Tom Singer / MLB.com
As part of upcoming Earth Day celebrations at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees have joined in a partnership with Keep America Beautiful, the nation's largest volunteer-based community improvement organization which focuses on environmental issues. Earth Day, observed globally on April 22 to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's natural environment, will be commemorated at Yankee Stadium on April 28, when the Yankees will be hosting the Chicago White Sox. The first 18,000 fans will receive a package of flower seeds to inspire their participation in the environmental improvement of their communities. This latest partnership continues the Yankees' ongoing effort to incorporate eco-friendly initiatives in and around Yankee Stadium. During the 2010 season, for example, waste management through composting and the recycling of cardboard, glass, metal, plastics and paper helped divert more than 35 percent of Yankee Stadium's trash away from landfills. Also, nearly 9,000 gallons of cooking oil used in the Stadium last year were converted into roughly 7,000 gallons of biodiesel fuel.
