Indeed, Tuesday night will be a clear example that the Yankees' captain is embracing his current march toward history, creating his own opportunity to help others.
During the Red Sox-Yankees series opener in New York, the shortstop -- who enters the game 14 hits from 3,000 -- will wear a DJ3K silicone bracelet commemorating the upcoming achievement. Proceeds from sales of the bracelet will benefit the 2011 Jeter's Leaders Leadership Conference, the part of Jeter's Turn 2 Foundation that empowers high school student leaders from across the country by providing valuable tools to accomplish social change.
In addition, a pregame ceremony will honor eight of the 2011 "Jeter's Leaders."
"I thought it was a great idea, to get an opportunity to help out the foundation through this whole event, so to speak," Jeter said. "We thought it was a great idea -- myself, MLB and the Yankees organization. I'm happy. I think we have an opportunity to raise a lot of money."
Jeter has worked with Major League Baseball and the Yankees to design the bracelet, which is stamped with "DJ3K" as well as the Yankees and Turn 2 Foundation logos. Bracelets are available at the MLB.com Shop, retail outlets and Yankee Stadium. A two-pack costs $5, with one dollar going to the leadership conference.
MLB.com is tracking Jeter's March to 3,000 each day, and there are many ways for memorabilia hunters to celebrate the moment as it nears and passes. The Authentically Jeter section of the MLB.com Shop includes collectibles, T-shirts, jerseys, game-used cleats and more.
Additional DJ3K merchandise commemorating the 3,000th hit will be released immediately following the achievement.
Since its launch in 1996, the Turn 2 Foundation has awarded more than $12 million in grants to create and support signature programs and activities that motivate young people to turn away from drugs and alcohol and "Turn 2" healthy lifestyles.
