6/29/2015 | Cutch seeks surge in final week of ASG voting

The final 2015 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot voting update was released Monday afternoon, and it shows that Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen is going to need some help to return to the National League's starting lineup.

6/29/2015 | Call Cole the Cy Young slayer

Back during Gerrit Cole's 2013 Major League infancy, before he'd established any discernible identity (aside from the celebrity of being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft), just to clue in the sort of pitcher they were talking about, some journalists referred to him as "Gerrit Verlander." You know, comfortably in the mid-90s and able to dial it up to triple digits when needed in the later innings.

6/28/2015 | Bucs' seventh-inning rally fizzles vs. Wood

The Pirates entered the seventh inning down by two runs with the heart of the order coming up against Braves lefty Alex Wood, who'd been all but unhittable in Sunday afternoon's 2-1 loss at PNC Park. But a rally fizzled after two singles to start the inning.

6/28/2015 | Bucs shuffle roster as Tabata, Volstad DFA'd

Pittsburgh designated outfielder Jose Tabata and right-hander Chris Volstad for assignment. To fill their spots on the active roster, the Bucs selected the contract of outfielder Gorkys Hernandez and recalled utility man Steve Lombardozzi from Triple-A Indianapolis.

6/28/2015 | Good Wood: Braves quiet Bucs in finale

Left-hander Alex Wood quieted the Pirates into the eighth inning on Sunday as the Braves downed Pittsburgh, 2-1, to snap a five-game losing streak.

6/28/2015 | Cutch back, wears elbow guard after HBP

Andrew McCutchen put pitchers on guard prior to Sunday's game -- then put a guard on. When he came to bat in the first inning of the Bucs' 2-1 loss to the Braves, McCutchen wore an elbow guard on the left arm where he had been hit by a Julio Teheran pitch in the first inning of Saturday's game.

6/28/2015 | Verlander back in action for showdown with Cole, Bucs

After missing his last scheduled start, Justin Verlander will return to the mound Tuesday night as the Tigers begin a three-game series against Gerrit Cole and the Pirates at Comerica Park.

6/27/2015 | Pitch, Hit & Run championship held at PNC Park

Morning rain along the Allegheny River didn't ruin the chance of a lifetime for 24 participants in Saturday's Pitch, Hit & Run team championship at PNC Park.

6/27/2015 | Morton eats innings, but saves bite for Guerra

After recording only two outs in a disastrous outing last time out, Pirates right-hander Charlie Morton did his best to eat up innings in the Pirates' 8-4 win Saturday at PNC Park. But he saved a special bite for Deolis Guerra.

6/27/2015 | Marte hits, runs, even stands on head in win

As the expression goes, some Pirates might have been thinking between rain delays on Saturday at PNC Park, "I'd stand on my head to help us win." Starling Marte actually did it, though. He provided the lighter side of the Bucs' 8-4 win over Atlanta with a seventh-inning slide that didn't quite go as designed.

6/27/2015 | Locke, Wood set to battle in finale at PNC Park

After Charlie Morton hit the hill Saturday, Pirates southpaw Jeff Locke -- another part of Pittsburgh and Atlanta's 2009 trade -- will face his old club when Alex Wood and the Braves close out the three-game series at 1:35 p.m. ET on Sunday at PNC Park.

6/27/2015 | X-rays negative, Cutch a 'little sore' after HBP

Andrew McCutchen is used to getting pitched inside. He's accustomed to getting pegged by pitches like a dodgeball player. Saturday was nothing new for McCutchen, in that regard. But it was no less painful, as he had to exit the Pirates' 8-4 win over the Braves during the first inning after taking a 91-mph fastball from Julio Teheran off his left elbow.

6/27/2015 | Hurdle addresses Polanco's baserunning gaffe

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle has seen a lot during his time as a player, coach and manager. But the fourth inning of Pittsburgh's 3-2 win over Atlanta on Friday night presented something entirely new to Hurdle.

6/27/2015 | Alvarez, Marte lead Bucs in rainy win vs. Braves

Pedro Alvarez has only been along the ride for most of the first half of the season, but he may be ready to give the Pirates a lift. Alvarez's two-run double triggered a five-run first on Saturday and the Bucs went on to an 8-4 win over Atlanta at rain-soaked PNC Park.

6/26/2015 | Cutch sparks Pirates' game-winning rally

Jordy Mercer ended the Pirates' 10th-inning walk-off rally in their 3-2 win over the Braves on Friday night at PNC Park. But it was Andrew McCutchen who got it started.

6/26/2015 | Mercer making a habit of ending slumps in June

Stop us if you have heard this one before: Jordy Mercer lifted the Pirates' spirits and their winning percentage in Friday night's 3-2 win over the Braves with a 10th-inning walk-off RBI double, his third hit of the game and sixth hit of a week that has seen his average reach .225 after being at .192 entering June. Oh, wait. You have heard this before: By June 26, 2014, a hot stretch had raised to .229 Mercer's average, which was at .199 entering June.

6/26/2015 | Liriano settles down for solid game vs. Braves

Pirates left-hander Francisco Liriano had just walked the bases loaded, then walked the Braves' No. 8 hitter, Ryan Lavarnway. It was only the second inning, but Liriano looked like he might be losing control of the game. Then out to the mound came pitching coach Ray Searage, reminding Liriano to calm down even with the bases loaded. Two pitches later, a harmless pop out in foul ground. Four pitches after that, a swinging strikeout.

6/26/2015 | Worley's worth proving invaluable to Pirates

One of the most valuable, if also most overlooked, members of the Pirates' 2013 playoff pitching staff was Jeanmar Gomez, who filled all of his roles well. As the long man in the bullpen, Gomez went 2-0 in 26 games with a .235 opponents average. In his spot starts, the Bucs went 8-0. Vance Worley could be Gomez 2.0 for the '15 Pirates.

6/26/2015 | Scahill placed on DL with forearm strain

After giving up a go-ahead home run to Brandon Phillips in the 13th inning Thursday, Rob Scahill's night got a little worse. The reliever's right forearm began to tighten up, an injury he's never dealt with before. That led the Pirates to place Scahill on the 15-day disabled list Friday with right forearm tightness. Pittsburgh selected the contract of right-hander Deolis Guerra from Triple-A Indianapolis to take Scahill's spot in the bullpen.

6/26/2015 | Morton faces former club as Pirates take on Braves

Starting pitchers Charlie Morton of the Pirates and Julio Tehran of the Braves are coming off extremely different last outings as Pittsburgh hosts Atlanta on Saturday at PNC Park.

6/26/2015 | Mercer's walk-off double leads Pirates over Braves

Jordy Mercer's one-out RBI double in the 10th inning gave the Pirates a 3-2 walk-off win over the Braves on Friday night at PNC Park.

6/26/2015 | Despite Burnett's effort, 'pen has another long night

The "6.0" next to A.J. Burnett's name in the boxscore should have been a good sign for an overworked Pirates bullpen. The veteran right-hander battled through a few long innings, but hung around for most of Thursday night. Problem was, Thursday night turned into Friday morning with the score still tied at PNC Park. And once again, the Bucs' relief corps wound up working overtime in a 5-4 loss to the Reds.

6/26/2015 | Walker's miscue on basepaths looms large

In a 13-inning contest that highlighted any and every detail, Neil Walker's unfortunate break to second base was another missed opportunity PNC Park fans will remember in a 5-4 loss to the Reds on Thursday night.

6/25/2015 | Liriano gets the call as Braves come to PNC

When the Braves and Pirates begin a three-game series on Friday night at PNC Park, both teams will be attempting to distance themselves from the recent struggles that have weakened their place in their respective divisions.

6/25/2015 | Cueto set to face Syndergaard in return to hill

After taking a few extra days to rest his elbow, Reds ace Johnny Cueto is ready to hit the hill against Noah Syndergaard and the Mets on at 7:10 p.m. ET on Friday at Citi Field.
