Ruben Sierra's three-run double in the seventh capped a six-run inning that propelled the Yanks to their seventh straight win. Alex Rodriguez had brought NY within two with a three-run HR, the 350th of his career, making him the youngest player to reach the milestone.
Once up 8-3, the A's proved unable to solve the Yankees in their Oakland series opener. Mark Mulder had only allowed three runs through six, but was hit hard in the seventh and left with seven earned runs as the Yanks continued their mastery of Oakland.
