Johnny Damon hammered two solo homers off Tim Wakefield, but that wouldn't be enough for Andy Pettitte, who had a rough go of it against Boston, which socked the veteran for six runs. With the loss, the Yanks dropped to six games behind the Red Sox for the AL Wild Card lead.
