Green Initiatives

NYY Recycles

The Yankees are committed to helping promote a sustainable environment and have implemented many green initiatives at Yankee Stadium.

SPORTS LIGHTING

Each lighting fixture above Yankee Stadium consumes approximately 300 fewer watts than a typical stadium fixture and has a 50 percent reduction of "light spill" onto adjacent property. Control systems and building automation increase the lifetime of the lighting system. These improvements mean that during one night game, nearly 207,000 pounds of CO2 emissions are saved. That's the equivalent of about one tree being planted for every pitch of the home season.

SUSTAINABILITY FACILITY PROGRAM

This program ensures the efficiency of equipment while focusing on energy reduction. Instead of petroleum-based plastics, beverage cups are made of biodegradable material. Waste generation is tackled through composting and recycling cardboard, glass, metal and plastics/paper and should divert approximately 40 percent of Yankee Stadium's trash away from landfills. This also results in fewer trash pickups and trash trucks on the road.

BUILDING CONTROL AND AUTOMATION TECHNOLOGY

The different systems used to operate Yankee Stadium are calibrated to the specific usage patterns of the Stadium and reduce the power consumption of lighting and ventilation systems when they're not needed.

GREAT HALL
Green Initiatives - Great Hall

The Great Hall will not have air-conditioning, instead relying on natural cooling. The savings is about the same as 10,000 New York City apartments shutting off their air-conditioning for a summer day.

RESTROOMS

Each year, Yankee Stadium's plumbing fixtures are projected to save 3.1 million gallons of water and reduce Yankee Stadium's water consumption by 22 percent. Additionally, Yankee Stadium uses GoJo hand soap, which doesn't require water for use. Close to 1 million gallons of water will be saved per season if every guest uses this soap.

PAPER PRODUCTS

The Yankees are committed to purchasing only paper products made from 100 percent recyclable paper. Yankee Stadium is the first major league ballpark to commit to keeping all of its operations and maintenance manuals 100 percent electronic. This saves 10 trees, 100 pounds of solid waste, 1,000 gallons of waste water and 10,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity.

MASS TRANSPORTATION
Green Initiatives - Mass Transportation

Yankee Stadium is located within close proximity of the subway, Metro-North, buses and other mass transportation systems. Guests and employees are encouraged to utilize public transportation in order to reduce CO2 emissions and reliance on foreign oil.

COOKING OIL

Yankee Stadium has recycled 8,879 gallons of cooking oil from Yankee Stadium this year to date. This oil has been used to produce 7,192 gallons of biodiesel fuel. When used in vehicles, this biodiesel will displace 129,455.8 pounds of carbon emissions. That is the equivalent of removing 11.76 cars from the road for a full year.
