The New York Yankees partnered with various community-based organizations to ensure local youth started the 2015/2016 school year on a positive note.
In partnership with the 161st Street Merchants' Association's 15th Annual Back-to-School Jamm, 2,500 Bronx-based students received Yankees backpacks and back-to-school supply kits.
The New York Yankees teamed up with Public School 55 in the Bronx to provide local students with Yankees backpacks and the school supplies needed to succeed in the classroom.
In support of Volunteers of America's Operation Backpack, 2,000 Yankees backpacks were distributed throughout the five boroughs to children living in homeless and domestic violence shelters, equipping them with the tools needed to succeed.
Lauren's Kids, Inc. is committed to preventing child abuse by promoting awareness, reinforcing advocacy, and embracing child safety concepts. Lauren's Kids works in conjunction with school administration to implement Safer, Smarter Kids, a six-week sexual abuse prevention curriculum, in elementary schools. With the New York Yankees support, Lauren's Kids provides programming in Bronx-based schools. On Friday, June 19, students/educators from Community School 55 in the Bronx who completed the Safer, Smarter Kids curriculum demonstrated their commitment to end child abuse and promote the message of hope and healing by participating in Lauren's Kids "Kids Care" Walk. The Walk commenced at Community School 55 and concluded in Yankee Stadium's Great Hall, where students were congratulated with a ceremony, food and beverage and tickets to attend that evening's Yankees game.
The New York Yankees transform areas within Yankee Stadium into classrooms to create productive learning environments that provide area youth with opportunities to participate in positive educational outlets.
The New York Yankees and Literacy, Inc. partnered to host a literacy workshop at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, July 23. Approximately 30 students and their parents/guardians attended an interactive workshop where they were educated on techniques focused on improving literacy skills. Front office staff read books to the youth in attendance and engaged them in discussion. In addition, those in attendance were treated to lunch at Yankee Stadium and received complimentary books to utilize their reading skills at home.
Learning Through an Expanded Arts Program, Inc. (LeAp) counters illiteracy and improves the quality of public education for students through a unique, hands-on, arts-based approach to teaching the core curriculum. Endorsed by the New York City and United States Departments of Education, LeAp provides an early childhood literacy program called Active Learning Leads to Literacy (ALLL) to develop literacy and critical thinking skills for students Kindergarten through fifth grade. The New York Yankees support LeAp's efforts to implement the ALLL program in several Bronx-based public schools. On Wednesday, June 24, LeAp's ALLL local graduates were rewarded with complimentary tickets to enjoy the Yankees game. The top students from each of the four participating schools proudly displayed their artwork in an art exhibition showcased at Yankee stadium. In recognition of these students' efforts, they were hosted in a Hospitality Suite and recognized on-field during a pregame ceremony.
The New York Yankees are proud supporters of the Morris High School Campus FIRST Robotics Program. Since 1999, students from Morris High School have been competing in FIRST Robotics Competitions where teams work together to create robots designed to complete various tasks. FIRST Robotics works hard to encourage students to become interested in and to pursue careers in science, math and engineering. On an annual basis, the Yankees recognize the students' accomplishments during an on-field pregame ceremony; showcasing the Program's commitment to providing local youth with a superior educational experience.
The New York Yankees and the New York Public Library (NYPL) partner to encourage New York City students to utilize/exercise the reading skills they acquired during the previous academic year. The NYPL's Summer Reading Program challenges students to read during the summer months, and rewards two students from each borough who read the most books over the summer. On Wednesday, August 26, the Yankees provided 500 tickets to the NYPL so students who participated in the 2015 Reading Program could attend a game at Yankee Stadium. In addition, the two students from each borough that read the most books met with Adam Warren prior to the game to discuss the importance of reading and were recognized during an on-field pregame ceremony. To date, the New York Yankees have dedicated in excess of $400,000 in resources to the NYPL's Summer Reading Program.
The New York Yankees collaborated with the Public Schools Athletic League and Nike to host the Most Valuable Pupil Scholar-Athlete Awards Ceremony at Yankee Stadium. Eleven scholar-athletes from each of the five boroughs were recognized for their athletic achievements and accomplishments in the classroom. In addition, on Saturday, December 26, the 55 MVP Scholar-Athletes were recognized on-field at the end of the first quarter of the New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium.
The Sport Management Mentoring Program was established to expose students throughout New York City to career options associated with professional sports. On a monthly basis, the New York Yankees work in conjunction with schools and community-based organizations that identify local youth to participate in a mentoring seminar at Yankee Stadium. At these meetings, a panel of Yankees front office personnel lead interactive discussions and share insightful information about their educational background, career paths, position and day-to-day responsibilities. They also provide an overview of what takes place off the field and away from public view, engaging students with supporting materials. In addition, students are treated to a working lunch and a private, behind-the-scenes tour of Yankee Stadium, where they can apply theory learned during the discussions. At the conclusion of the seminar, students have a better understanding of the business side of a sports franchise and potential career opportunities that exist.
