T.J. Beam
T.J. Beam, whose given name is Theodore, was originally an 11th-round pick by Philadelphia in 2002
but opted to remain at the University of Mississippi. The Yankees grabbed him in the 10th round a year later
but early on there were few signs that he would develop the way he has. While bouncing between Staten Island
and Battle Creek during the 2003 and 2004 seasons, Beam developed a slider, marking a turning point in his career.
Since incorporating the pitch into his repertoire, Beam has advanced quickly and become a dominant reliever. He began
this season at Double-A Trenton but is already in Columbus, poised to make the move to New York.

Scouting Report
Pitches:
Beam’s fastball isn’t overwhelming but it has enough movement to keep the hitter true. His slider and
split/change have become his real meal tickets, the development of which has coincided with his emergence
as one of New York’s top prospects.
Estimated Time of Arrival:
It’s never easy to predict what the Yankees will do with a prospect regardless of their recent history.
Considering how well Beam has pitched over the last year and a half, though, he should be in the Bronx
some time this summer.

J. Brent Cox
J. Brent Cox followed A’s reliever Huston street as the closer for the University of Texas,
where he helped win the College World Series. Like Street, the 2nd round pick
should move quickly through the Minor Leagues and help in the Yankees bullpen soon.
He was the 3rd college closer taken in the 2005 draft, behind Craig Hansen and Joey Devine,
both of whom have already tasted the big leagues. Cox didn’t pitch much in his debut last summer, mostly to
cut him some slack after a taxing run to Omaha with the Longhorns, during which he appeared in 9 games (saving 5),
allowing just 3 earned runs and striking out 17 in as many innings en route to being named to the all-tournament team.
Cox has the all-time appearances record at Texas with 106 and is second on Texas’ all-time saves list, behind Street.
His 19 saves in 2005 tied a school record, as did his 42 appearances.

Scouting Report
Pitches:
Cox is a lot like Street in terms of how he gets hitters out,
though his stuff grades out just a tick below his predacessor’s.
He can hit the low 90s on the radar gun with his fastball.
When he takes a tick or two off, it has some nice sink.
His out pitch is a hard slider. He may not have the stuff to
close long-term in the big leagues, though he certainly possesses
the attitude and confidence to succeed in that role. At the worst,
Cox should be a relieable set-up man in the Majors very soon.
Estimated Time of Arrival:
In another organization, Cox could be pushed to the bigs now.
With the Yankees, though, it’s more likely he’ll hit the Bronx
by September, Opening Day 2007 at the latest.
