T.R.A.M. Extra Innings at Derek's Dugout 2010-11 Program Year
March was Pet Care Month for participants of the after-school program. The children discussed proper techniques and ways to take care of and feed and groom their pets. Throughout the month, different pets were brought in to the after-school program for the children to learn about. Also in March, the youth spent a lot of time working hard to prepare for their play, which would take place in April. The participants also enjoyed some nice weather during the month and took the opportunity to go spend a beautiful afternoon outside in the park.
On Feb. 21, the Dining to Donate fundraiser was held at the Three Rivers' Applebee's, with proceeds going to Three Rivers Area Mentoring. The nutrition series continued into February as a nutrition expert spoke to the participants about eating habits and staying healthy.
In the new year, Extra Innings at Derek's Dugout began a six-week nutrition series provided by Michigan State University Extension Office. This allowed the participants to learn about nutrition in a fun and innovative way. The after-school participants also took advantage of the snowy winter to have some fun tubing!
December was a festive month for all the participants as they were able to take part in various activities throughout the month. On Dec. 9, they held their Joy of Giving Christmas party. The participants spent another fun-filled day at Bair Lake Camp. After a fun day of activities, the participants all gathered for a nice dinner. On Dec. 15, the participants had special guest speakers, Steven and Phyliss Weiandt. The Weiandts spoke to the children about their mission trips to Africa and Steven's life as a bush pilot for more than 40 years. They brought in and shared many pictures from their trips with the children. The year ended in grand fashion, with Turn 2's Holiday Express at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo. The participants were able to enjoy a fun and exciting end to the year before going on break for the holiday season!
November was an exciting month for participants as they took part in Fall Adventure Day on Nov. 4. The group went to Bair Lake Camp and participated in wall climbing and zip-lining, among many other activities.
On Oct. 11, the after-school participants participated in the "Let's Jump" event, which was put together by National Geographic Kids and United Healthcare. It was part of a nationwide initiative to have more than 20,000 people jump at the same time across the nation in order to be entered in the Guinness Book of World Records. On Oct. 22, TRAM's Annual Coat Drive was held. The after-school participants assisted in setting up the event. The drive was a success as several families arrived to pick up coats. October also marked the beginning of different clubs in the program, such as the cooking club, arts and crafts club and the science club.
The 2010-2011 program year of Extra Innings at Derek's Dugout started on Sept. 29. The program year got off to great start with a trip to the Scidmore Zoo, where everyone enjoyed the trip by getting to know each other through traditional games and team-building activities!
