Begins his 32nd year in professional baseball as a player, coach or scout in 2014… has coached or scouted for seven teams that have reached the World Series, with five of those clubs- including the 1996, '98 and '99 Yankees-going on to become world champions. Was named Yankees bullpen coach on 12/20/13… marks his fourth stint in the Yankees organization after serving as the club's Major League catching instructor from 1996-99, and again from 2003-04… in 1996, was also a roving catching instructor and managed Class-A Oneonta… originally joined the Yankees in 1989 as Triple-A Columbus' strength and catching coach… was the Yankees' catching and bullpen coach at the Major League level in 1990. Most recently served as the Red Sox bullpen coach for six seasons from 2007-12… served as a coach for the AL squad at the 2008 All-Star Game at the original Yankee Stadium. Spent the 2006 season as Joe Girardi's bench coach for the Florida Marlins. Made three stops in the Indians organization… served as the minor league catching instructor and managed the Class-A Watertown affiliate in 1991… was with Cleveland from 1993-94 and again from 2000-02 as a Major League scout, national cross-checker and catching consultant. Spent seven seasons as a minor league coach and manager in the Astros system from 1982-88, earning Southern League Manager of the Year honors in 1986 after leading Double-A Columbus to the league championship.
Was signed by Montreal as a free agent in 1977 and spent three seasons serving in various capacities in the Expos' minor league system in Sarasota (1977), Jamestown (1978) and West Palm Beach (1979), only appearing in a game for Jamestown in 1978.
Married (Annie) and has a daughter, Shelby… did post-graduate work at Arizona State University and the University of Notre Dame… earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from Indiana University in 1979, where he also played football… in 1972, was nominated to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Coached at the collegiate level at Arizona State and Notre Dame… helped lead ASU to the NCAA National Championship in 1981 as an assistant coach.
