In 2012, Toronto Blue Jays players Rajai Davis, Kyle Drabek, Drew Hutchison, Luis Perez, Eric Thames and Omar Vizquel visited elementary schools across the Greater Toronto Area to discuss the importance of keeping healthy and fit. The players participated in a wide array of games and activities as well as provided some guidance on the values of proper nutrition to all of the students.
On April 15, 2012 outfielder Eric Thames along with Blue Jays mascot ACE, visited a very welcoming class of Grade 6 students at St. Andrew's Public School. The group spent time talking with Thames in the gymnasium about their favourite activities and what he does to stay in shape for baseball. Following introductions and a quick warm-up, the classes wend outside to the nearby baseball diamond for a game of kickball; Team Thames vs. Team ACE!
On April 30, 2012 Blue Jays infielder, Omar Vizquel joined the Grade 5/6 students at Dunlace Public School for lunch in their classroom. Nutritionist, Jennifer Sygo also accompanied Vizquel on-site as a special guest speaker to discuss healthy lunch selections and the many nutritional benefits we get from a variety of foods. The class participated in an interactive nutrition activity while enjoying a selection of sandwiches, wraps, fruits, and vegetables.
On May 30, 2012 pitchers Kyle Drabek and Drew Hutchison went to Williamson Road Public School to take part in a playground obstacle course with a very energetic and competitive class of Grade 4 students. The match up was Team Drabek vs. Team Hutchison, both of which competed in a series of obstacle course races. Afterwards, the students were able to have a Q&A session with the pitching duo asking them about everything from baseball to what their favourite school subjects were.
On June 12, 2012 Blue Jays pitcher Luis Perez joined a Grade 6 class for an afternoon of dancing in their school gymnasium. The group worked up a sweat moving around to the music, dancing and learning the Blue Jays seventh inning stretch. A dance instructor was there to lead after the kids had a chance to participate in a Q&A session with Perez.
On June 15, 2012 Blue Jays outfielder Rajai Davis spent an afternoon enjoying healthy snacks with the Grade 6 students of John Wanless Jr. Public School. Nutritionish, Jennifer Sygo was also again in attendance as a guest speaker giving the class her expert advice on healthy snacking. One of the key messages that afternoon was how much sugar hides in our daily snacks!
